X-energy, founded in 2009 by Kam Ghaffarian, focuses on high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGR) using proprietary TRISO fuel. Unlike competitors attempting to shrink traditional water-cooled reactors, X-energy’s design targets industrial heat and power, making it uniquely suited for co-location with heavy industry or data centers.
The company secured $1.2B in DOE funding through the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP) in 2020 to build its first commercial unit. Strategic pivots in 2023-2024 moved the focus from pure utility sales to "energy-as-a-service" for industrial partners like Dow Chemical and Amazon.
The Amazon partnership (Oct 2024) and this subsequent Jane Street round (Nov 2025) mark the transition from R&D to commercial scaling. X-energy is currently constructing a dedicated fuel fabrication facility (TRISO-X) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to verticalize its supply chain.
